A skin tag is a small, benign, out-pouching of skin that is usually connected to the underlying skin by a thin stalk. Skin tags look like small bits of “hanging” skin and usually occur in sites where there is skin-to-skin friction like the groin, upper chest, underarms or when the clothing rubs against the skin. Skin tags aren’t present at the time of birth but with the increasing age, their frequency tends to increase. About twenty five percent of adults have skin tags. Causes of Skin Tag:
Skin tags are known to appear due to the friction between skin and clothing and also the adjacent areas of the skin. The most common sites for skin tags are Groin folds, eyelids, neck, upper chest and underarms. Skin tags are much more common in obese or overweight people due to increased skin to skin contact . Skin tags are also found in kids but are most common in middle aged older people. The hormonal changes during pregnancy can also lead to the growth of skin tag especially during the 2 trimester of pregnancy. Skin tag cannot be called as cancers there are few reports of skin cancers appearing in skin cancer.
Symptoms of Skin Tag:
Skin tags are normally flesh-colored or may even look brown in light-skinned individuals. They may be wrinkled or smooth and range in size from extremely tiny (one mm) to roughly the size of a grape. Though it is usually possible to identify a stalk that joins the skin tag to the underlying skin, very tiny skin tag may look like raised bumps on your skin. If a skin tag is twisted on its blood supply it may become black or red Skin tags may bleed if they are torn or if caught on any clothing. Skin tags are not usually painful and are not related to any particular symptoms or skin condition. But people who are prone to diabetes and have a skin problem called acanthosis nigricans usually have skin tag.
Home Remedies for Removing Skin Tags
1) Oregano oil
Oregano oil contains p–cymene, arvacrol and thermol which are the 3 type phenolic terpenoids components and have very powerful antibacterial properties. Make a mixture of 2 to 3 drops of oregano oil and 4 to 6 drops of coconut oil. Apply this mixture directly on your skin tag 3 times in a day. This will make your skin dry so that the skin tag fall off on their own.
2) Lemon juice
Lemon juice has citric acid which helps in drying out the skin tag as it decomposes the cells. It is also an extremely powerful antiseptic. Cut a lemon in half and squeeze out the juice and apply on your skin tag with the help of a cotton ball.
Fresh garlic has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties which help dry out skin tag. You will need 4 fresh garlic cloves . Ground these up into a paste and apply the paste on the skin tag.
