Lately, you may have seen or heard from a friend that they are interested in essential oils. Essential oils – a critical component of the aromatherapy practice – has become more and more popular over the past couple of years. However, if you’re not familiar with the oils, you may be a bit skeptical. Below, you’ll find some of the ways essential oils are useful and how you can use them in your home.
What Are Essential Oils?
According to the International Organizations for Standardization, essential oils are products “made by distillation with either water or steam or by mechanical processing of citrus rinds or by dry distillation of natural materials. Following the distillation, the essential oil is physically separated from the water phase.” Thus, essential oils are basically highly-concentrated plant extracts.
When shopping for essential oils, you’ll find that there are two primary types. Pure essential oils are just as their name indicates. They are 100 percent pure oils, derived only from a single plant. The other kind you’ll find is essential oil blends, which combine a few different types of oils.
Benefits Of Essential Oils
One of the unique things about essential oils is that their benefits can range depending on which type you use. Of the many benefits, one that stands out the most is the fact that they have antibacterial properties. This can make them an excellent choice to help keep your home clean. You can either use the oil to kill surface-level germs or you can use a nebulizing diffuser to kill airborne particles (more on that below).
Another benefit is that they serve as a natural deodorizer. You won’t have to use chemical sprays to help freshen a room in your home. Instead, consider using essential oils. They are easy to use, as your nebulizing diffuser can run throughout the day without needing to do anything. You’ll find that a couple of drops of essential oils can leave your home or office smelling better in no time.
There are a few essential oils that are particularly noteworthy when it comes to their antibacterial properties and ability to freshen a room. Those include any type of citrus essential oil, such as lemon or orange, tea tree oil, and peppermint oil.
Another similar use for essential oils is as a natural whitener for your clothes. For instance, you could add two or three drops of lemon essential oil to a laundry load of white clothes. The lemon will work to remove tough stains just as well as any commercial stain-remover, if not better. However, you can trust that using lemon essential oils on your clothes is safe, as the product is entirely natural.
Working parents can also become stressed throughout the day. One study from the American Institute of Stress found that at least 60 percent of Americans report that they are stressed daily. Fortunately, essential oils can help since some specific oils have natural calming properties.
One study from the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that lavender essential oil had a direct impact on people’s stress levels. Another study from the International Journal of Nursing Practice found that applying a lavender essential oil spray to your clothes could reduce work-related stresses for up to four days. In addition to lavender, other calming essential oils include ylang-ylang, chamomile, and bergamot.
Lastly, essential oils can have a naturally-uplifting effect. If you’re looking for a shot of energy to help start your day, consider using citrus essential oils in the morning. These oils tend to have a naturally-uplifting property.
Using Essential Oils With A Diffuser
If you’re first getting started with essential oils, you’ll find that there are a couple of ways in which you could use the product. However, the best way to use essential oils is with a nebulizing diffuser. This will disperse oil particles into the air of your home or office, allowing you to inhale the particles.
Nebulizing diffusers are entirely safe and unique because they rely on Bernoulli’s principle, which means they do not require heat or water to operate. This means you won’t ever have to worry about refilling a water tank or leaving your diffuser plugged into an electrical outlet. The only thing you’ll need to concern yourself with is whether there’s enough oil in the diffuser.
Nebulizing diffusers also come in numerous:
How To Use Essential Oils
Using a diffuser is not the only way you can effectively use essential oils. You could also create your own cleaning spray by adding a couple drops of your favorite disinfecting essential oil to a solution of water and vinegar. Essential oils could prove to be a safe, cost-friendly alternative to store bought household cleaners. One of our favorite “recipes” for a disinfectant spray is as follows. All you must do is combine these substances into a spray bottle. You can then use this to safely clean surfaces in your home:
- ¼ cup white vinegar
- ¾ cup distilled water
- Seven drops of tea tree essential oil
- Seven drops of lavender essential oil
Lastly, some people find that applying essential oils topically is also useful, especially for things such as healing wounds. However, you should make sure that you are careful when doing so. First and foremost, essential oils are quite powerful. Anything more than a drop or two of the oil is likely too much. Secondly, not all oils interact well with each other. You’ll want to make sure you’re only applying oils that are meant to interact with one another.
